'Material Experimentation' at Paper Gallery & PS Mirabel, Manchester

Sometimes in order to seek out new and interesting art you have to wander the back streets of the city to find independent, vibrant galleries who set their own agendas and triumph in promoting artists who fit within their ethos.

The ethos at Paper gallery in Manchester is to focus on 'paper'. Yes, its specific focus is works on paper or using paper as a support. An intriguing proposition in the contemporary art world... and one that makes sure their gallery stands out for all the right reasons. With a credible roster of artists including George Shaw. Paper offers residencies every year to select artists and to start the new year is an end-of-residency exhibition for Liverpool based artist Frances Disley.

Frances explores the notion of presenting artworks in a state of flux, unresolved and tipping into the next stage of transformation. 'Intermission' plays her crude paper sculptures in different stages of completion or resolve, which toy with both the process and the methods of display. Her resolve is if the studio is the rehearsal space for the works, then the gallery must be the theatre and 'Intermission' is the performance.

A concentrated selection of works include 'Setting' a crushed velvet draping which has been digitally printed and spray painted, to a zippy looking sculpture made out of coloured, painted paper and finally to encaustic works such as 'Proposition #3'... again a digital print but with wax and paint. These works are my favourite, being a painter they shout to me 'experimental' 'vivid' 'liberal'.

Next door is PS Mirabel and open to the public right now is their exhibition 'Can I use Glue instead?'. The works in this eclectic collaborative exhibition displays stitch in all its glory. Designed to push the artists to question it and try different mediums within sculpture and visual art. Particular favourites of mine were the hanging installations, the fabric flour sifters made to look like boobs (I think!!) and the 'cling-film-esque' full body cocoons... not your everyday sight!

Here are loads of photos from both opening previews which I hope you find informative and inspiring. Both exhibitions have just started and will be on for the next month (details below).
